?Quantum Learning? makes inroads at CedarBridge Academy

CedarBridge Academy has decided to train all its teachers in an innovative education programme which school officials say has already yielded positive results.

Quantum Learning ? an integrated teaching style that involves visual and audio aids and playacting ? has received rave reviews from US and Canadian schools and was introduced to CedarBridge Academy students last September.

According to the Catalogue of School Reform Models, Quantum Learning began in 1981 and was founded by Bobbi DePorter. Since then the innovative method has been taken up by more than 80 schools in the US and Canada.

Because of its encouraging results at CedarBridge Academy, the principal and deputy principals have decided all the school?s teachers will do Quantum Learning training sessions.

The school will also be running Super Camps in the summer to keep children ?sharp? during their vacations with the programme.

Super Camp is usually run for a two-week period, teaching students how to apply Quantum Learning to their everyday life to help them be more successful.

Super Camp will be held in Bermuda in August of 2005 at CedarBridge Academy.

Norma-Jean Richardson, deputy principal at CedarBridge Academy, told that all of the new teachers at CedarBridge will be involved in Quantum Learning workshops.

?Quantum Learning is more effective than the ?traditional? way of teaching,? said Mrs. Richardson. ?It doesn?t just focus on auditory learning it focuses on all three areas in which a child may learn. It targets all of the children who learn in different ways.?

CedarBridge tries to instil the basic principles of Quantum Learning in its students with the eight keys to excellence ? Integrity, Failure Leads to Success, Speak With Good Purpose, This Is It!, Commitment, Ownership, Flexibility and Balance.

The programme teaches students of all ages how to communicate more effectively with other people. It also teaches students how to have better relationships with their peers.

Music which either calms students or makes them more energetic for the class is integrated into the programme.

Mrs. Richardson said that she noticed that the teachers who use Quantum Learning are the ones that return better results.

?With Quantum Learning students are continually being praised, not just by the teachers but by the other students? said Mrs. Richardson.

Despite Quantum Learning?s proven success rate it has not been introduced to all of Bermudas schools, even after MPs have expressed concerns with the education system.

?This (Quantum Learning) is more effective than other methods of teaching,? said Mrs. Richardson. ?Children are compelled to become involved. I believe that it?s something that every school on the Island can benefit from.

?Quantum Learning uses everyday situations so that students can more easily relate their everyday life to their classes.

?Our aim is to make CedarBridge Academy a Quantum Learning school.?
