Unpaid teachers to receive pay by Friday

Over 60 teachers who received no pay or were underpaid last month due to a Government foul up will receive the monies they are due this Friday, a Government spokesman confirmed yesterday.

The Royal Gazette reported on October 6 that a number of new Government teachers had not received their pay cheques for the month of September due to a mix-up between the Accountant General and the Ministry of Education.

Several other teachers who had been given posts of responsibility in addition to their teaching positions had not been compensated for those posts, and still more who were due to receive pay increments did not receive those increments.

Then-acting minister of Education, Sen. Michael Scott, personally contacted those involved and promised the matter would be resolved “as soon as possible”.

In a statement last night Government spokesperson John Burchall said the 53 teachers who required pay for posts of responsibility will be paid on Friday.

“Additionally, the Ministry was made aware of ten persons who had not received their salaries at the end of September,” he said.

“Arrangements have been confirmed with the Accountant General so these persons will receive their cheques on Friday, October 17 as well.”

“There are a small number of persons who were appointed to the school system after the start of the school year,” he continued. “With their agreement, these persons will receive their salaries at the end of October, 2003.

“The Ministry would like to apologise to those who were affected. This has not been an easy period of time for those persons and their families. However this matter of outstanding payments has now been brought to a speedier resolution than originally anticipated.”

Bermuda Union of Teachers general secretary Michael Charles said yesterday that the teachers were aware of the promise. “I'm hoping it gets done,” he said.
