Learning differences

series on people with learning differences should be required reading for anyone concerned with education and with ensuring that young Bermudians are fully equipped to enter the economy.

The lesson that comes through loud and clear that is writing children off at an early age because they do not learn in the same way as others can be disastrous.

But the series also shows ? as demonstrated by the profiles over the last two days of people with dyslexia who have gone on to have successful careers and lives ? that early intervention and focused teaching can set people on the right track, often with spectacular results.

It is true that educators today are much better at identifying learning differences early and setting up alternative teaching schemes than they were 20 or 30 years ago.

But it is worrying that many of those profiled needed to attend private schools abroad or had to receive additional tutoring in order to overcome the problem. Government needs to ensure that all students in schools, private or public, rich or poor, have access to the help they need.

Clearly the investment is worth it, and Bermuda cannot, to steal the US phrase, afford to leave any child behind.
