PHC Canaries won the Bacardi Sevens Tournament on the weekend after beating a strong Cardinals team 1-0 in the final on a Rhonda Rawlins penalty at National
Cardinals proved a stern test for the Canaries and their defence seemed able to handle Rawlins' numerous forays towards their goal. Eventually the pressure told and a defender's foot on the line gave away the penalty stroke two minutes from time, from which Rawlins sealed the match and the Bacardi Trophy.
The losers from the first round matches played in the consolation which saw Swifts I work their way into the Carol Hammond consolation Trophy final against Police Orioles. The Swifts youngsters were in a determined mood and their energy created endless problems for the Orioles, whose experienced defence held out in normal time.
In the best-of-five penalty strokes to decide the winner, Swifts goalkeeper Amie Dawson pulled off three excellent saves which -- combined with Ana Anton and Tiffany Sousa's successful attempts -- saw Swifts collect the trophy in their first year of competition.
Just two league matches were held over the weekend, with Longtails beating Police Orioles 3-1 in the A League and Canaries and Orioles drawing 1-1 in the B League.
Longtails overcame a resilient Orioles team after keeping up the pressure for long periods. Orioles looked dangerous on the break though with Mary-Ellen Jackson and newcomer Tanya Semos.
Eventually Joanne Wilson put them ahead in the first half only to see Marcia Ford peg them back after being put through by Semos. Longtails continued to press for the winner, eventually scoring twice through Donna Rawlins after Orioles had lost their sweeper Heidi Lynam through injury.
In the B League match, Canaries came back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Orioles. In wet and slippery conditions, Canaries failed to take advantage of numerous penalty corners and allowed Orioles to take a first-half lead through Fiona Doe.
In the second half Canaries achieved an equaliser, and despite having most of the play failed to come up with the winner. Orioles came more into the game late in the half and could have stolen the game when good work by Jackson on the right wing saw Lisa Young narrowly miss the centre and an open goal.
