Homeless man fined $400 for assaulting police officer

A 59-year-old man who assaulted a police officer and violently resisted arrest, was fined $400.Chesterfield Johnson admitted the offences when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court.Crown counsel Cindy Clarke said uniformed police were conducting checks along The Glebe Road in Pembroke after Friday’s shooting.Johnson, of no fixed abode, cycled toward police and failed to stop when ordered.He pushed and struggled with officers as they attempted to stop him, causing one officer to fall to the ground.Johnson told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner the brakes on his bike hadn’t worked, and said he had not heard a request to stop.He was fined $200 for each offence, and given a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
