The application for the site on Ireland Island was approved by the Development Applications Board, this week.

And although this is still an early stage in the Salvation Army plans it is looks like being a boost for young people in Bermuda.

Divisional Comander Major Elmer Pavey said the plans were still in their early stages and that the site would not be ready by next summer.

Major Pavey said: "We have been trying to develop a camping facility in the Dockyard or Somerset areas for some time.

"It will be for general use for the Salvation Army and the community instead of having to use Government sites.

"We will use it for the youth like scouts, guides, cubs and brownies. We will also have music camps and camps for children who do not get an opportunity for an experience like this.

"This is only the first stage of the scheme. It is an attempt to get something a little more permanent.'' Other applications aproved by the Development Applications Board include a new church at the Radnor Road Christian Fellowship on North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish, and new dormitories and a workshop at the Reefs Hotel in Southampton.

A Shell Oil application for a small shed to provide cover for maintenance and dock facilities on Ireland Island was deferred.
