Somerset shock Social Club as St. David's cut the gap at the top
Somerset CC 210
Social Club 141
Premier Division pacesetters Social Club stumbled on Sunday and saw their lead at the top of the table slashed to two points after they lost to Somerset CC at Devonshire Rec.
While Social Club were going down by 69 runs, second-place St. David's closed the gap at the top with an emphatic seven-wicket victory over second from bottom Cleveland at Lord's.
Skipper Hasan Durham and Azeem Pitcher led Somerset to victory, both striking 59 runs and to help the westenders to a respectable total of 210 off 44.4 overs. Also among the runs were Dwight Basden with 27 and Jordon DeSilva with 16.
Several Social Club bowlers shared bowling honours by taking two wickets. Skipper Kevin Hurdle claimed two for 23 off 7.4 overs and two maidens, Charlie Marshall had two for 31 off nine overs, Jayno Durham two for 45 off 10 overs and a maiden and Jeffrey Tyrell two for 54 off 10 overs.
Social Club batsmen were indifferent at the crease with few able to offer much resistance against a spirited bowling attack led by young Marcus Johnson who snatched four for 65 from 7.3 overs of spin while Jordon DeSilva took two for 24 off 10 overs along with five maidens.
Social Club found themselves in a mess early with a mere 30 runs and five leading batsmen back in the pavilion but there was hope with Charlie Marshall still at the wicket. Indeed the veteran stayed around the offered resistance while piling on the runs with his team high 54 but with too few other contributing the final result was inevitable, although skipper Hurdle attempted to play a supporting role with a knock of 19. Nakia Smith chipped in with 10.
Cleveland 125
St. David's 126-3
At Lord's second place St. David's made short work of Cleveland, winning by seven wickets. Clay Smith struck 37 and Shaki Darrell 15 for Cleveland but with nobody else in any scoring mood they were unable to leave the home team with a more challenging total to chase. Mikkail Crockwell was the top bowler for St. David's with four for 33 off seven overs while Del Hollis claimed three for 37 off nine overs with a maiden.
Opener Chris Foggo continued to blast local bowlers, this time slamming 71 not out with 10 fours and a six for the home side while O.J.Pitcher was undefeated on 22 with three fours when victory was reached.
Flatts 133
Western Stars 136-6
Stars recorded their second win of the season but still were unable to climb off the bottom of the table.
At St. John's field, they beat Flatts by four wickets with Machai Campbell taking three for 19, Gershon Gibbons two for 28 and skipper Justin Robinson two for 37.
Regino Smith topped Flatts' batting with 23 while Kijuan Franks followed with 22 and Lloyd Fray with an unbeaten 20.
