Somerset dig deep to upset Bay

Bailey's Bay fell from the ranks of the unbeaten as Somerset brought their run to a halt with a hard-fought three-wicket victory in Limited Overs Gold Division action at the west end on Sunday.

An under-strength Bay side entered with the match with the opportunity to clinch themselves a spot in the quarter-finals of the competition. But two late game-saving stands -- both involving Cordell Gilbert -- put paid to any hopes Bay may have had of easing through.

With the score 51 for six and all of the front-line batsmen seated back in the pavilion, Gilbert (18) and Shannon Warner (21) first engaged in a seventh-wicket stand worth 24 runs, which carried the score to 75 before Warner was out to a catch by Devrae Hollis off the bowling of Dennis Pilgrim.

This wicket breathed life back into the Bay faithful, however Gilbert and young Toriano Davis (15) punctured their lungs. They stubbornly resisted the visitors' attack, plugging away at the bowling for the remaining runs, finishing with an unbroken eighth-wicket partnership of 35.

Pilgrim captured three wickets for Bay with his medium-pacers while Kamal Trott and Jermaine Outerbridge took two apiece.

Teenager Kerry Tucker batting at number eight top scored in the Bay innings with 36 and Glenn Smith continued his fine form with 30. Both hit the ball hard as Smith registered two fours and two sixes, while Tucker was in an equally belligerent mood, blasting three sixes to go along with three fours.

Somerset skipper Andre Manders did some damage with the ball, claiming three Bay scalps in 2.4 overs. Anthony Bailey also bowled well, returning match figures of three for 35.

Hamilton Parish 228-7 Devonshire 232-6 Anthony Amory led from the front as he clubbed an unbeaten century off a feeble Hamilton Parish bowling attack, carrying Devonshire to a four-wicket triumph, assuring them of a place in the quarter-finals of the Gold Division Limited Overs competition.

Skipper Amory torched his opponents for 124 runs, which included five sixes and 13 fours. His hundred came up in 133 minutes off just 55 balls and in all his stay at the crease lasted 145 minutes.

However, the burly Amory was not the only Rec. player doing damage as opener Terry Fray displayed great patience and control in his knock of 55. He and Amory accounted for 133 runs in their third-wicket partnership with Fray mostly in a supporting role.

There was a mini-collapse following the departure of Fray. From 165 for three, Devonshire went to 194 for five before Leon Place (10) came in to check the slide and after his dismissal it was left to Lloyd Smith (two not out) to cross the score alongside his captain.

Cal Burgess, the fourth bowler used by Parish, came in for particular abuse with his four overs adding 29 runs to the visitors' total. Chris Caisey was the most productive and economical bowler, capturing two wickets for 35 from 10 overs, including that of Fray.

The astroturf also proved kind to Parish early on as they had four players exceeding the 30-run mark.

Millard Bean scored 41 opening the innings, Dennis Trott had 36, Cal Burgess 31 and number seven bat Brian Morris hit five fours in his top knock of 48.

Nationals 234-9 Willow Cuts 235-7 Willow Cuts gained their first win of the season in Limited Overs play in thrilling fashion as they crossed the target set by Nationals with just three balls to spare.

Dexter Basden laid the groundwork for the win with 87 runs opening the innings. He and cousin Dwayne Basden (12) combined for 92 runs for the first wicket to get things rolling in the right direction.

The skipper also participated a partnership of 24 with Anthony Fubler and he and Andrew Rollins (31) took the total to 163 with their stand of 47 for the third wicket.

Basden was finally the sixth man out at 194 but Joseph Matthews (32) carried on where his skipper left off.

He and veteran Charlie Fox chipped away for 39 runs together before Fox was removed by Mark Ray. But Rodney Fubler proved an able partner for Matthews to thwart Nationals in their quest for the win.

Wilfred Hudson was able to extract something out of the pitch at the Royal Naval field, exploiting it for four wickets, while Chris Wright and Mark Ray each had one apiece.

Wright did much better with the bat as he plundered 55 runs off the Cuts attack. Mark Ray likewise had a decent outing, scoring 38.

Matthews' 10 overs of medium pace reaped him a four-wicket reward and Rodney Fubler managed two wickets from his 10 overs.

Cleveland 135-9 Police 138-7 Michael Jackman hammered Cleveland skipper Peter Philpott over mid-wicket for six runs to seal victory for Police in this Green Division game at Sea Breeze Oval.

The shot enabled Police to win by three wickets and ended their frustration when they were forced to struggle after being poised to win easily.

After reducing Cleveland to a modest 135 for nine after the match was limited to 40 overs per side, Police were seemingly cruising to victory at 100 for two when the bottom fell out.

That is when Cleveland turned to their spinners Gregory Talbot and Johnny Richardson and wickets started to fall.

Young Talbot dismissed Andre Hendrickson (29) and shortly afterward, Police were reeling at 121 for seven with most of their top bats falling to the spin bowlers.

In the end it was left to Jackman to win it but not after playing nervously against the spin. He struck the six after an appeal for bad light was turned down with 10.8 overs left.

Skipper Ferdinand Thorne was top bat for Police with 34 while Tyrone Smith scored 25, Dennis Archer 13 and Jackman 12 not out. Talbot had three for 30 and Richardson two for 12.

Aaron Adams led Cleveland in batting with 33. Jermaine Postlethwaite followed with 24 while Richardson scored 18. Ossie Hinds took two for 18 and Thorne had two for 19.

Flatts 248-6 Social Club 138 Troy Dean and McDonald Woolridge struck half-centuries to lead Flatts to a comfortable victory at Devonshire Rec. field.

Both players had scores of 55 as Flatts started strongly with Dean and Derek Wright (22) putting on 70 for the first wicket.

Woolridge joined Dean after Wright's dismissal and the two added an additional 42 before Dean was bowled by Lee Raynor after hitting nine fours.

Woolridge's knock included four fours, and he was assisted by skipper Rodney Woolridge who made 31 and brother Brandon who made 31 not out. Social Club did not help their cause by contributing 37 extras.

Raynor claimed two for 32 and Gershon Gibbons two for 41. Social Club's innings started poorly with the first three wickets falling for 19 runs.

From there it was an uphill battle as only Raynor (49) and Thomas Brangman (22) made an impression on the Flatts attack. Raynor hit four fours and two sixes.

Floyd Smith claimed two for 28 and McDonald Woolridge two for 33.

PETER PHILPOTT -- Cleveland's skipper had made wehn he was run out in sunday's loss to Police. Looking on is Barry DeCouto.
