Phillips blasts St. George's past county aces
Tail-enders Kenny Phillips and Clarkie Trott rescued St. George's from 112 for seven to lead them to their match-winning total of 261 in Saturday's trial at Wellington Oval.
Phillips hit 11 boundaries in his top knock of 84 while Trott chipped in with 44 in an eighth-wicket stand of 69 before Trott fell to Del Hollis. Phillips then added a further 78 with number 10 bat Gary Brangman (19 not out) as the team's last three wickets produced 149 runs.
Earlier, Charlie Marshall continued his good form with 45, after openers Clay Smith and Dennis Archer both failed to reach double figures. Captain Graham Fox scored 28.
Dale Fox took the first four wickets to fall and finished with four for 67 from 14 overs while Lionel Cann claimed two for 38 and Cecil Pitcher two for 51.
Opener Wendell Smith and tail-ender Bruce Foggo both scored 25 and Allen Richardson 22 as St. David's offered little resistance to the St. George's bowling led by Brangman's four for 22 from 10.3 overs.
Spinner Eugene Foggo took two for four from five overs while Phillips bowled just one over before racing off to work, though he did manage to remove Anthony Foggo in that lone over.
BCBC XI 314-8 Somerset 251-6 Jeff Richardson blasted 86 and Leon Place supported with 64 as the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control XI reached a massive total against Somerset in their drawn Cup Match trial match at Somerset CC.
Richardson, coming to the wicket at 24 for two, hit 86 of the next 122 runs before he was fifth out. He and opener Ricky Hill (34) set the stage for a big total when they took the score from 24 to 104.
The runs continued to flow after that with Richardson leading the way as number six bat Place provided good support, dominating the batting after Richardson departed before being the last wicket to fall on 270.
David Jones, batting at number nine, hit a useful 45 not out as the tail wagged with Jones and John Ray (24 not out) putting on 44 in an unbroken ninth-wicket stand as the 300 came up.
Richard Basden claimed two for 50 from 15 overs and Anthony Edwards two for 78 from 15 overs.
Somerset had a bad start to their innings as openers Jermaine Warner and Dexter Basden departed with just 18 runs on the board. Albert Steede led the recovery with a sparkling 94 before being bowled by Albert Simons.
Also chipping in with useful contributions were Anthony Amory with 49, Leverock 27, James Pace 24 not out and captain Manders, batting at number eight, 20 not out.
Perry Maybury took two for 29 from 10 overs while Simons finished with two for 71 from 14 overs.
