Pow Wow in park to remember the late Alice Lopez
The St. David's Islanders and Native Community have dedicated their 2011 pow wow to the memory of 49-year-old Alice Lopez, who died suddenly on New Year's Day.A native American, Ms Lopez was honoured in a service at Barrs Park on January 18.Chairman of the St. David's Island Native American community Nives Filice said the park was a location where Ms Lopez, a member of the Mashpee Wampanog, had taught songs to their group.Mrs Filice said the attendees “stood in a circle and felt her spirit with us”.Ms Lopez helped organise pow wows in the past and had been assisting with this year's celebration.Mrs Filice said: “Alice played an integral part in our reuniting with our East Coast Tribal relatives that we were taken from 300 years ago as a result of slavery.“Alice attended every pow wow since 2002 and touched the lives of many Bermudians. She taught us dances and songs with patience and grace. She so wanted us to learn and understand our Native heritage and shared what she knew willingly. She believed in Bermuda and Bermudians.”
