Minister to investigate BCB name change

Sports Minister Dale Butler says he will investigate claims that alterations made to Bermuda Cricket Board?s (BCB) official title at an Annual General Meeting in 2003 were done so unconstitutionally.

The Board was formally known as Bermuda Cricket Board of Control.

The matter first came to light after the February 25, 2003, meeting held at Warwick Workmen?s Club where president Reggie Pearman?s term in office was extended to four years.

Following the AGM, former Board executive Rudolph (Mutt) Lawrence charged that ?several irregularities? took place at the meeting.

Butler said this week: ?This matter has been brought to our attention and we will be writing the BCB to ascertain the true facts.

?We cannot make any further comments on the matter because we haven?t seen any minutes to verify what did or did not take place during the meeting.

?But we will write the BCB and ask for verification through their affiliates that it (AGM) was done so correctly and if it was done incorrectly then the Attorney General will then be advised that the necessary amendment be made in Parliament.

?If it grieves members (affiliates) then we will pursue the matter because it has been brought to our attention.?

BCB president Pearman insists that proper procedures were adhered to during the AGM.

?The clubs ratified the name at a special general meeting that was called. We (BCB) just can?t make changes arbitrarily. We must put matters before the clubs first and then they agree to them,? he told

Pearman said alterations to the Board?s constitution could also take place at an AGM.

Alterations made to the Board?s previous motto ? (Strength, Honour and Fair Play) ? were also alleged to have been made unconstitutionally.

According to section ten of the Board?s constitution: ?Any amendment or addition to this constitution shall require an initial recommendation from the Board and the subsequent assent of not less than two-thirds of the voting members present at a properly constituted general meeting of the council with notice of such having been clearly stated on the agenda.?

In order for the Board to have made alterations to its constitution ?A special meeting shall be called on the written request of not less than three members, the date, time, venue and purpose/agenda to be clearly stated in the request,? the Board?s constitution reads.
