Stovell bidding for national team recall
Southampton Rangers? opening batsman Dion Stovell could be recalled to the senior national programme in the near future.have learned that Stovell ? the only Bermudian batsman to score a double century at any level representing the Island on the international stage ? has seemingly had a change of heart and expressed remorse to Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) for publicly accusing Board executive Gary Fray of acting out a ?personal vendetta? against him.
Stovell quit the national programme in disgust after being overlooked for Bermuda?s ICC Intercontinental Cup commitment in Namibia late last year.
In 2004 the Board imposed a four-month ban on Stovell for refusing to walk after being given out by the umpire for a catch behind while representing Bermuda?s Under-23 national team on a tour of Jamaica in 2003, and for allegedly displaying disruptive behaviour during subsequent disciplinary hearings.
In an interview with this newspaper Stovell, one of the Island?s most naturally gifted batsmen, threatened to quit the game altogether but reconsidered and only last weekend won a first Belco Cup winner?s medal with Rangers.
Stovell carved his name in local cricket history in 2001 when he scored a whirlwind 204 not out for Bermuda against Argentina in the Americas Under-19 Championship in Toronto - the highest individual tally in the history of the international competition.
When contacted yesterday, Stovell declined to speak on the matter but he did confirm a letter had been sent to the Board on his behalf expressing a desire to rejoin the national squad and bid for a 2007 World Cup spot.
Stovell is also vying for a spot on Somerset Cricket Club?s Cup Match squad this year, scoring 71 runs last Monday during the challengers? first trial match of the summer.
BCB president Reginald Pearman confirmed yesterday that the Board had received written correspondence from Stovell and said the player?s fate now rested in the hands of his fellow Board executives and national team selectors.
?This matter has been passed on to the executive and a decision will also have to come from the selectors whether they want to recommend they have Stovell be reconsidered,? Pearman said.
?But at the moment no decision has been made.?
National coach Gus Logie preferred not to get drawn into the issue, but did state: ?I haven?t seen him (Stovell) play that much, but have heard a lot about him and I am certain so too have one or two of the selectors.
?But we are going to be guided by all the information we gather first before we make any assessment of the individual.?
Francis Patton won the Primary School Cricket Finals at the National Sports Centre yesterday, defeating Paget Primary by eight wickets.
Paget batted first and posted 76 without loss in their allotted 15 overs, Jalen Smith (26) and Jevon Swan (12) sharing in an unbroken opening partnership that held the Francis Patton attack at bay.
However, the East End school replied with 80 for two on the back of an unbeaten knock of 49 from Onias Bascome to clinch the title with four overs to spare.
