'The Food Crisis: A Global Challenge' is the topic for the United Nations event attended by Global Arts Foundation management team and Youth News.com students.

Twenty students from public and private schools across the Island are participating in the conference in the General Assembly Hall and keeping journals for the next edition of the Youth News.

They have learnt that every 60 seconds, two children die of malnutrition and preventable diseases. Here are a few extracts from their first-day reports, sent to The Royal Gazette by the Youth News team:

• "Our team of twenty arrived to a white covered New York after an East Coast storm last Monday. Fortunately everyone was prepared with the appropriate winter gear; scarves, mittens and warm winter coats."

• "We are staying in Times Square. I can report that the Big Apple is as exciting as ever. I am also pleased to report that several people I met in nearby shops had recently seen Bermuda promoted by Jet Blue specials."

• "At registration for the 33rd Annual Conference, I was welcomed by my peers from 45 nations. In front of me were students who travelled from Japan. Behind us they had just arrived from Oslo, Norway.

"The General Assembly Hall is as grand as I had imagined. I am extremely proud to be here with my team representing Bermuda at the United Nations. With nearly a thousand kids from all over the globe; the atmosphere is electric."
