Govt paid out $4.4m on court building settlement
Government paid out $4.4 million on a court settlement over the Dame Lois Browne Evans Building, according to Public Works Minister Trevor Moniz. The overall bill for the Court Street facility was just over $94 million, Mr Moniz told MPs.Overall, the Budget cost centre for the police and court building required a supplement just shy of $2.25 million for 2011/12.“The overspend was covered by cash savings found in the Tynes Bay expansion project,” Mr Moniz said. The Minister told the Budget Committee that the building had incurred extra costs in that fiscal year for claims initially submitted as $7.53 million, from two unspecified contracts.“After considerable research, analysis and negotiation, the claim was settled for $4.4 million,” he added. There were further professional costs from reviewing it.The Ministry was unable by press time last night to identify the recipient of the claims. In 2010, architects Carruthers Shaw and Partners sued Government for $1.4 million after they were taken off the project. However CS&Ps lawyer Alan Dunch last night confirmed that the claim still hasn’t been settled — in part because Government had fired its own counter-claim at the Canadian company.
