The stage is set for dramatic fifth-game finishes in two play-off series of the Commercial Softball League as BF&M defeated Business Systems and Gateway

Donny Moniz cracked a three-run homer in the sixth inning while Ken Williams and Mike Soares drove in a pair of runs each to help pitcher Alan Winston secure the victory as BF&M defeated Business Systems 9-4.

Winston limited Business Systems to only six hits, handing the loss to Dane Brown, who could not help his own cause despite two hits in three plate appearances. Joe Geaney also added a pair of hits, both for extra bases when he scorched the field with a triple and double.

Gateway Herd came up with their finest play-off performance to date when they defeated Cock & Feather 12-7. Gary Carr was four-for-four, including a home run and double, in leading the Gateway attack. Even winning pitcher Mark Kaplen participated in the hitting binge when he had four hits, including a home run. Pat Persse drove in three runs, the only blemishes in pitcher Dennis Pamplin's otherwise solid performance. Matt Taylor (three-for-three) and Chris Schuller (one-for-three) led the offensive attack for the losers.

Showbizz wrapped up their play-off series with a 17-7 victory over Cooper & Lines when they erupted for nine runs in the sixth inning. Gary Knight and Bruce Leckie were offensive stars as Showbizz captured the Division C pennant.

Knight was three-for-three at the plate while Leckie contributed two hits in helping pitcher James Thomas to the victory. Harold Aitken and Clinton Aitken were each three-for-three to lead C&L batters. Keith DeCosta was tagged with the loss.

SQUASH SQU Bermudian Carolyn Young was recently honoured as the most improved player on the Trinity College women's squash team.

The distinction was earned after Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reid Young, posted a remarkable 11-1 record in only her first (freshman) year on the team.

Trinity, of Connecticut, finished the season with a similar 11-1 record and was ranked number two in the nation behind Harvard, who handed them their sole loss, in dual match play.

They were, however, the top small college programme overall for the third straight season. This year marked the best regular season finish since the 1986-87 season when the team went 10-1.

After opening the season with a disappointing 0-9 loss to Harvard, the Bantams proceeded to rattle off eight straight wins heading into the Howe Cup tournament, in which they finished fourth.

They followed with three more victories to round out another highly successful season.
