CLASSIC SHOWDOWN
Thousands are expected to cheer on Bermuda at the National Sports Centre this afternoon in the final of the 20-20 World Cricket Classic against the mighty South Africans.
Bermuda, who will be captained by Bailey?s Bay all-rounder Irving Romaine, recorded victories over the West Indies and England this week to book their place in the final while South Africa comfortably overcame Australia and New Zealand and go into today?s clash as clear favourites.
The North Field as the NSC has a capacity of around 5,000 and despite rumours circulating to the contrary yesterday, there are still plenty of tickets available. Organisers were keen to stress that, within reason, they would not be turning anybody away at the gates.
Barring any later changes in the national team?s hectic schedule in the build up to next year?s World Cup in the Caribbean, the final will probably be the last opportunity Bermudians will have to watch them in action on local soil. Despite an $11 million investment in the team by Government over four years, the Island is not yet in possession of a cricket ground capable of hosting international matches ? meaning Bermuda will spend up to 15 weeks this year alone playing abroad.
Romaine said yesterday how much the players enjoy playing in front of their home supporters and urged as many people as possible to come out and support the team.
?It?s been a real pleasure playing at home,? he said.
?The support we have been getting so far has been absolutely terrific and it makes playing in this tournament so much more enjoyable. All of us are hoping that the turnout is even better for the final because it might be the last time we play at home before the World Cup.? To purchase tickets online, log on at www.boxoffice.bm.
