Beckham?s LA Galaxy heading to the Island

David Beckham?s LA Galaxy will lock horns with Major League Soccer (MLS) rivals New England Revolution on local soil next month, can reveal.

It was confirmed last night after Bermuda Football Association (BFA) officials had met with local promoters, Setplay, that the two MLS giants will visit Bermuda?s shores to play two friendly matches, including one against each other.

?We?ve always said we would look to bring quality teams here to help our guys to develop their football, and I think is a good way to achieve that,? stated tour promoter and former West Ham striker Clyde (Bunny) Best.

The Revs are scheduled to arrive in Bermuda on February 16 accompanied by Bermudian striker Khano Smith, while the Galaxy arrive on February 19.

Tentative plans are to have the Revs play one match against Shaun Goater?s United Soccer League (USL) expansion team, Bermuda Hogges, and MLS rivals Galaxy. LA are also scheduled to take on Bermuda?s senior national team. While no venue has yet to be officially confirmed, it is highly likely all matches will be staged at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

Only recently, 2005 MLS champions Galaxy acquired the services of world-renowned footballer Beckham in a record $250 million deal. The 31-year-old midfielder, who will join the Galaxy after his contract with Real Madrid expires later this year, is unlikely to tour Bermuda.

However, Best is keeping his fingers crossed that Real Madrid will have a change of heart and release the star footballer earlier than originally planned.

?It would be nice if he can come because it certainly would give our fans a chance to see him. He is a world class player but at this point in time we can?t confirm anything,? Best added.

Bermuda Football Association agreed last night to sanction the tour ? New England?s third in succession. The Revs will be here until February 24 and the Galaxy until February 25.

?I think this will be a great opportunity for the Bermuda public to see two North American teams play in Bermuda at same time,? BFA president Larry Mussenden stated.

?I think this will be a nice thing to see and the public will be treated to some exciting football.? As for Beckham, Mussenden added: ?What a joy it would be if he is able to come, although I understand it will be unlikely he will be attending.?

Mussenden said next month?s tour will provide the senior national football team with some much-needed exposure.

?We are always looking for competition for our senior national team,? he added.

?And I think our team will give a good showing just coming off of the Digicel Cup competition in the Caribbean.

?The BFA?s aim remains to establish Bermuda as one of the best teams in the Caribbean, and that is still a very realistic goal we can achieve.?

Mussenden urged the local football public to come out and support next month?s incoming tour.

?I would like to encourage the Bermuda public to try and buy tickets in advance so that the series can be a financial success,? he said.

?This would allow for more tour matches to be held locally in the future.?
