St. George's MPs hear Obama, Blair speak at Washington function

Two politicians heard personal testimonies of faith from US President Barack Obama and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair as they attended the National Prayer Breakfast.

Opposition Leader Kim Swan and Government Whip Lovitta Foggo were among 3,000 guests from more than 180 countries who travelled to Washington D.C. to take part in the event.

Held on the first Thursday in February, this year marked the 57th National Prayer Breakfast. Hosted by the US Congress, the event takes place in the Hilton's international ballroom and is organised by The Fellowship Foundation, an American religious organisation.

Mr. Swan and Ms Foggo were invited to meet Congressman Chris Doyle of Pennsylvania and were among a group of Caribbean delegates addressed by Senator Bill Nelson of Florida.

In his keynote address, Mr. Blair recounted his "first spiritual awakening" at the age of ten when his father suffered a life-threatening stroke.

Mr. Swan described Mr. Blair's message about "the unconditional nature of God's love" as a "lesson in humility".

He said yesterday: "As Opposition Leader it was important for me to hear the human side of a world leader whom I respect, and a leader who is also held in high regard around the world."

Ms Foggo said she was also inspired by Mr. Blair's speech. She said: "He shared with the world the trepidation and self-doubt that often confronts leaders when they are called upon to make those tough decisions and that it is his faith in the Almighty which guides him."

Both MPs also praised the message of Mr. Obama, who spoke of the second commandment of 'love thy neighbour' and how it is universal among different faiths.

Mr. Swan said: "We felt that being present and having the opportunity to interact with many different American and international delegates who also share a faith in God was a humbling experience. It gave hope that if we show love to our neighbour, it is at least possible to move towards the ideal of one world under God."
