Road traffic collisions decreased by 6.5 percent in 2012 and were also lower than the 2010 total.Last year there were 1,837 road collisions compared with 1,956 recorded in 2011. In 2010 the total was 2,211.According to figures released by the Bermuda Police Service, there were 819 collisions resulting in injury reported last year, compared with 852 in 2011 and 832 in 2010.A total of 951 persons were injured in the reported collisions 645 locals were injured slightly and 144 seriously; 150 tourists were injured slightly, with 12 seriously injured.The total number of collisions recorded involved 3,019 residents and 195 tourists in 2012, compared with 3,190 and 219 in 2011.There were 478 single-vehicle collisions in 2012, the highest proportion of which was 176 involving vehicles with four or more wheels.Police attended the scene of 84 collisions (4.5 percent) where alcohol or drugs was suspected as being the cause; 86 arrests were made on suspicion of impaired driving last year.There were nine road fatalities during 2012 and 2011 this figure was not included in the 819 injury collisions recorded in 2012.The statistical breakdown provided showed that inattention was the leading cause in 547 accidents recorded, down from 560 in 2011.Another 118 collisions were caused by overtaking improperly, 150 accidents were caused by motorists following too closely behind other vehicles and 201 accidents were due to inexperienced motorists.A total of 31 children were involved in accidents last year, down from the 38 recorded during the previous year. Most of the accidents (1,509 or 47.1 percent) involved private cars; motorcycles were involved in 761 or 23.7 percent of accidents.Most people (23.6 percent or 757 motorists) involved in road accidents last year were between the ages of 51 and 65. Another 639 motorists were between the ages of 21 and 30.
