Nash on course to reach $10k goal
With two weeks still to go before he leaves for Nicaragua, Ian Nash is well set to match last year’s donations of cash and medical and dental supplies which will go towards helping poor people in rural villages.Last year on his first trip to Nicaragua with the US-based charity Corner of Love, Mr Nash collected $7,800 in donations and also took four large containers loaded with medical supplies. As the result of an article in The Royal Gazette last month, Mr Nash has seen donations flood in as the community rallies behind the cause. He publicly stated a goal to raise $10,000 this year and so far has received $6,500 ahead of his February 17 departure.“It’s been really good,” Mr Nash said. “Unfortunately yesterday somebody dropped off a truckload of stuff and I had to turn some of it down because the bags I have are pretty much full with the medical supplies.“I’m trying to get more medical supplies than anything else. A lot of people have been trying to donate clothes and shoes and toys and I really wish I could take them all but I can’t fit it all in the bags I’m taking with me. Outpouring of support has been fantastic, but it’s unfortunate I don’t have the ability to take more of it with me.”Mr Nash will spend nine days in the country, doing charity work in different villages along with Seattle-based Corner of Love which sent down about 40 people last year, mostly doctors and nurses to provide medical and dental care to people with various ailments. The group will continue work on building a new school, medical facility and a church/recreational building for children in San Ramon.“A lot of people after last year wanted to see what my feedback was going to be. They wanted to see if I was going to doing something like this again.“After this year hopefully I will have a couple of people from Bermuda come with me because it is certainly on my mind already that I’ll be going back again next year, for sure. It’s a great cause, I can get the time from work to do it and I keep getting lots of pats on the back from family and friends that it is a good thing.”He added: “Hopefully in the next two weeks I can reach my goal of four or five bins and $10,000. I’m really happy with what I’ve been able to accomplish in the last couple of months. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help of a lot of people here on the Island.”Useful websites: www.corneroflove.org and www.cashfornash.com
