Club demand action over '92 heritage meet incident

prolonged attack on Bermuda Track and Field Association vice-president Stan Douglas during the Heritage Invitational/National Track and Field Championships last July at National Stadium.

Two local track clubs, Mid Atlantic and Hamilton Harriers, have both expressed their dissatisfaction with DesSilva's conduct and in formal letters to the association have indicated that steps should be taken to proceed with disciplinary action against the athlete.

This week DeSilva received notification from the BTFA informing him that Valdon Caesar has been appointed by the president to preside over a disciplinary committee that will "investigate the incident''.

Yesterday DeSilva was undecided on how he intends to respond.

"Let's just wait and see. This happened so long ago. I will just have to give it some thought before making a decision,'' he said.

DeSilva startled many by physical attack on Douglas. BTFA officials separated the pair and later had to restrain the athlete in a second attempt to get at Douglas again.

Amazingly, he was allowed to continue in the meet.

A hearing has been tentatively set for the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation for May 14 and 15 starting at 6 p.m. each day.

In the letter to BTFA president Phillip Guishard, Mid Atlantic Athletic Club president George Sutherland said in part: "I have been instructed to make known to you our dissatisfaction with the conduct displayed by Nick-Cole DeSilva on the evening of the Heritage Meet.

"Without stating the obvious reasons I hope the BTFA is seen to be dealing with this individual in a very firm manner as the incident was widely reported and witnessed by a great many people, including impressionable youngsters.'' Neil de Ste Croix, who is the Publicity Officer for Hamilton Harriers, wrote a hard-hitting account of the incident, first inquiring what action had been taken as a a result of the "assault by Mr. DeSilva on Mr. Douglas.'' "The appalling incident took place in front of a large crowd of spectators, which included a large number of children and a number of visitors from overseas.

"The main reason I am writing is to inform you of what I heard and saw about thirty minutes prior to the incident. While standing near the middle of the track I heard Mr. DeSilva telling a group of athletes how we was `going to smash him with starting blocks.' I did not hear to whom he was going to do this or why, but about 30 minutes later all was clear.''
