Cougars give coach perfect send-off
DEVONSHIRE COUGARS
League Champions
Martonmere Cup Champions
(defeated North Village 4-0 in final)
The big winners of the year, Devonshire Cougars, came away with both League and Martonmere honours, as coach Devarr Boyles departed in fine style after his first season at the helm.
In the Martonmere final showdown with Village, Cougars produced a goal-laden display to lift their first piece of silverware under Boyles.
A brace by Korvon Tucker and goals from Tumani Steede and Lamont Brangman sealed victory at Wellington Oval in a game that saw three players taken to hospital with head injuries.
If claiming the first trophy of the season wasn't enough, Cougars made a sustained run at reclaiming the coveted league title – their third in five years.
The main spark plug for the side, as always, was the ever-reliable Kwame Steede while the emergence of younger cousins Tumani and Moses Steede showed that the team are not just a one-man show.
One blip on their radar was the inability to beat Dandy Town in the second half of the season that made their trek to the league finish line a little bumpier and they were knocked out at the first hurdle in the FA Cup by the same side.
Yet, when the dust settled, the men from the Den emerged on top of the pile and look set to make their presence felt for some time to come.
BOULEVARD
FA Cup Champions
(defeated Dandy Town 5-3 in final)
Boulevard ended their barren run of 17 years without a trophy as they became FA Cup champions and deservedly so as they dismantled a Dandy Town side expected by many to beat Blazers.
Three goals in the opening 12 minutes put paid to any thoughts Town may have had of making up for last year's Cup defeat at the hands of PHC.
Two goals from Takeyhi Walker and lone strikes from Riecko Trott, Jahmah Samuels and an own goal from Seion Darrell paced the champions to victory.
The return of hero Andrew Bascome made a big difference and under his tutelage they finally had something to smile about.
"I'm proud of all my players but I thought Takeyhi Walker, Angel Simmons and Mel Gibbons were all superb for us," said Bascome.
"I'm very pleased with our performance and we probably should have scored more than five goals. It's definitely a relief to finish the season with a trophy and we saved the best for last."
DANDY TOWN
Dudley Eve Champions
(defeated Boulevard 2-2 (6-5 penalties) in final
Midway through the season, the Hornets were dealt a devastating blow when they lost right back Machai Campbell in a road accident – just days before the crucial match with Cougars, with the winners going on to face Boulevard in the final of the Dudley Eve.
Town swept aside Cougars with minimal fuss and proceeded to beat Blazers in the final 6-5 on penalties after regulation time ended in a 2-2 stalemate.
Strike partners Raymond Beach and Heys Wolffe both got goals on the night that saw their side emerge victorious.
The nail-biting penalty shoot-out was a fitting way to pay tribute to young Campbell and Town coach Scott Morton acknowledged after the match that his side had dedicated the title to their fallen comrade.
"We dedicate this victory to Machai and his family," said Morton. "It's been a difficult time for everyone involved around the club and it's a wonderful feeling to win this trophy and very emotional."
PHC
Friendship Trophy Champions
(defeated Southampton Rangers 2-1 in final)
After a high flying 2007/08 season that saw the side win three trophies, including the League and FA Cup 'Double', there was a certain buzz around the side heading into this campaign.
Yet nothing more than a whimper was left when the season concluded with PHC relinquishing all of their trophies from the previous season while claiming the one that they had let slip through their hands a year previous.
Having suffered a heavy defeat in last year's Friendship final to North Village, the side were determined to go the whole way this time around and seal a victory that ensured the side a tenth Friendship title.
The winning goal came from an unlikely hero, Kevin Richards, who was pleased with his team's performance and application to see the season out and lift a trophy.
"It's been a rough season, but we've now won all the trophies in two years and it's nice to get the one we missed out on last year," he said.
