Zebras ty one on Somerset
Somerset won this season's league title but PHC served a convincing reminder that they will be a team to be reckoned with when the new season begins in October.
PHC's never-say-die attitude at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday served them well as they took it to the home team to clinch a come-from-behind 3-2 win as Ty Williams, better known for his goal-saving heroics, scored twice and Dana Rawlins the other. Replying for Somerset were Dwight Basden and Kwame Tucker.
There were early signs of things to come as PHC were awarded a penalty for a hand ball in the second minute of play. Sammy Swan took the penalty and stroked his effort well wide of goal.
Somerset, spurred on by PHC's miss, took advantage of their opponents' misfortune when they scored six minutes later on a Dwight Basden header after he received a beautiful pass from Jerry Webb.
PHC had many opportunities to score as they earned six corners in the first 15 minutes of play. Ottis Steede and Swan both placed their efforts high and wide from outside the six-yard box while Frank Ming was also denied when he had a shot smothered by Somerset goalkeeper, Cordell Gilbert.
In the 26th minute, Somerset lost danger man Dwight Basden when he was forced from the game with a twisted knee. Rodney Bascome substituted and made his presence immediately felt with darting runs and powerful shots on goal.
PHC's perseverance paid dividends when they scored in the 37th minute after coach Jack Castle, in a rare appearance, fed a pass to Ty Williams.
Wiliams turned sharply on a defender, leaving him flat-footed, and fired a blast past the 'keeper.
Somerset roared back two minutes from the half when Anthony Burchall found Webb running free down the left side. Webb crossed from deep on the wing and found Kwame Tucker who deposited his blast just under the crossbar.
Unfortunately for Somerset, Tucker's strike would prove to be their last. In the 58th minute, Sammy Swan fed Dean O'Brien a pass along the right flank.
O'Brien's cross found the head of Williams whose glancing header found its way to the back of the net.
PHC concluded their scoring in the 85th minute when Dana Rawlins stole a pass intended for team-mate Sammy Swan and ripped his shot just inside the right post -- touching off a joyous celebration by the PHC faithful and offering a sign of better things to come next season.
