A man who crashed his car while drunk expressed relief that no one was hurt as a result.

Lavince Ellis, 35, told Magistrates' Court his car was a write-off after he ran into an embankment on North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish, at 4.45 a.m on April 13.

Police were called to the incident outside the Aquarium and arrested Ellis because he appeared to be drunk.

When he took a breath test, he was shown to be exactly double the drink-drive limit with 160 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Ellis, of Wellington Slip Road, St. George's, pleaded guilty to driving while impaired when he appeared before the court. Principal Crown counsel Michael McColm said the defendant had no previous convictions.

Ellis told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo: "I'm glad no other persons and vehicles were involved. It was my own dumbness. My vehicle was a complete write-off."

He went on to ask to be able to ride a bike, because there are no buses available to transport him to work at the Parks Department.

However, Mr. Tokunbo said that a 12-month ban from driving all vehicles is mandatory. He also fined him $800 and handed him ten demerit points.
