IT Field Technician
Bermuda Hospitals Board
"My wife encouraged me to go back to school and change careers."
Computer-minded students considering a career in Information Technology may not realise their skills and interest could be used to work in a hospital environment. Shawn Scraders started as a houseman at the hospital in 1991 but decided last year to pursue his dream and transfer to the Information Technology Service Department.
"I was inspired by my wife Sherilyn. She knew how much I loved computers and understood my passion for working on them."
After completing course work at MediaTek in Hamilton in 2008, Mr. Scraders was certified to perform computer tasks such as installation, configuration, diagnosing, preventive maintenance and basic networking. He was also trained in security, safety, environmental issues and communication.
Students interested in this field will need a minimum CompTia A+ Certification and working with users to help solve their issues, either over the telephone or by going out into the field.
"I love working with computers. And this job gives me an opportunity to help others in a health care environment. That really makes me feel good."
In addition to technical skills and a sound knowledge base for diagnosing PC problems, communication skills are essential. "We have to be good listeners in order to understand staff needs. We also have to explain how to operate and use computer equipment."
One aspect of his job that others may find surprising is how many work orders the IT Service Department receives on a daily basis.
"Our schedule is hectic, the work is demanding and the job is never boring! There are a great many challenges and rewards in my field."
