Bermudians go to the polls.

Listening to MPs during Wednesday's motion to adjourn, Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan said there seemed to be an election in the air. The Government and Opposition traded insults until past midnight, and another long session is expected today.

After it adjourns today for the summer, the House is not expected to sit again until October 29 or November 5. The general election could be held as late as next May, but many political observers expect a vote this fall.

Alcohol advertising and the economy are among four items to be debated today.

The Alcohol Advertisement (Health Warning) Act 1993 prohibits the publication of alcohol advertisements without inclusion of the warning: "Excessive alcohol consumption may be harmful to your health.'' National Liberal Party Leader Mr. Gilbert Darrell gave notice last month of his motion "that this House take note of the present state of Bermuda's economy.'' "Let's face it, the economy is an important thing to us,'' Mr. Darrell said yesterday. "Up until this stage, we really haven't had an opportunity for the average member in the House to make a statement.

"This is an opportunity for backbenchers and the non-Ministers to have their say.'' Mr. Darrell said he agrees with Finance Minister the Hon. David Saul that Bermuda is emerging from recession, but said a recession "is like a hurricane.'' "It's the aftermath, and getting straightened out that's the hard part,'' he said.

Also today, the House is to consider Government's proposal to sell .34 acres of land in Devonshire to the Mid Atlantic Boat and Sports Club for $180,000.

Government Whip Dr. David Dyer said the club has leased the land at 37 North Shore Road for some time.

The Bermuda Housing Amendment Act 1993, described as a minor change, is the other item on the order paper.
