GOLF GLF The Bermuda Golf Association rounded off the Amstel Golf League on Saturday with Port Royal I winning the A Division over their number two team and Ocean View II the B Division over BJGA, both by a margin of four-and-a-half points.
Port Royal I took a half point lead over their number two team into the final round at Mid Ocean. And they claimed the maximum 10 points while the number two team could only manage six points for their third place.
As a result, Port Royal I ended the season on 461 points while Port Royal II finished on 42. Mid Ocean Club overtook Ocean View I for third place with 341 points.
The B Division rounded off their 1992 season at Ocean View and fittingly Ocean View II took the league title with 40 points, four-and-a-half points ahead of early leaders BJGA who lost many of their players to US competitions during the school vacation period.
BGA Ladies hung in there to claim a first place spot with Ocean View II on the last day, although it wasn't enough to pip BJGA for second spot overall. Ocean View II will play in the A Division next season and Port Royal III will carry that club's flag in the B Division.
Next week, the individual standings in each division will be published, showing teams representing the top 10 A Division players who will play the annual challenge match against a PGA select team. The bottom 10 As will take on the top 10 B Division players at Port Royal on August 8.
Meanwhile, last minute entries for the Heritage Tournament to be held at the St. George's Club on Saturday will be taken by the secretary Tom Smith at 238-1367 up to 6 p.m. today.
RUGBY RUG The newly-formed Bermuda Onions RFC will be holding a constitutional meeting at the Docksider Pub on Friday starting at 6 p.m. Bermudian players are urged to attend the inaugural meeting.
The Bermuda Rugby Football Union has already sanctioned the formation of the club which will play against visiting tour sides as well as going on its own overseas tours.
SOCCER SOC Devonshire Colts Under 12s made it to the quarter-finals of the USA Cup in Minnesota this weekend, but finally went down 3-2 to a talented team from Hungary.
However, they had the consolation of being the only team to score against the Hungarians in regulation play.
The Colts advanced from the preliminary round with only one loss -- a 2-1 defeat at the hands of a team from Wisconsin.
Their victories -- an emphatic 7-0, and a narrow 1-0 win -- were over two local sides from Minnesota.
They earned their place against the Hungarians with a 3-1 victory over a team from Michigan in the championship flight.
Tariq White was the leading scorer for Colts with six goals, while Jamel Blakeney was the outstanding player of the series.
Coach Nelson Bascome said he was delighted with the team's performance both on and off the field.
