Man faces firearms and kidnapping charges

Ashley Wellman (pictured centre) is accused, along with Kenith Bulford, of kidnapping a man at gunpoint and causing him grievous bodily harm with intent.

A 30-year-old Sandys man appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday on firearm and kidnapping charges.

Ashley Wellman is alleged to have wounded Dwayne Reid-Anderson while holding the 25-year-old against his will with a firearm.

He is charged along with cousins Macray Bulford, 37, and Kenith Bulford, 35.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner read Wellman four charges stemming from the January 2 incident.

Along with the Bulfords, he was charged with unlawfully wounding Mr. Reid-Anderson and conspiring to use a firearm to deprive Mr. Anderson of his liberty. He was further charged with unlawfully detaining Mr. Anderson and robbing the Sandys resident of $4,000.

Wellman was not required to enter a plea as the charges are indictable. The Bulfords were not in court yesterday. The charges were laid to them last Friday.

The trio was first charged with the offences in January. Their case was halted on February 11 after Mr. Reid-Anderson indicated he wished to withdraw his complaint.

Prosecutor Cindy Clarke said the charges had been reinstated because fresh evidence had come to light.

Wellman was released on $25,000 bail and ordered to surrender his travel documents. He is to reappear in court on June 3.
