Boulevard are finally through to FA final
The FA Cup semifinal replay saga came to its conclusion last night when Boulevard brought an end to the script with a 4-1 victory over Dandy Town at Devonshire Rec. before another packed and enthusiastic crowd.
However, it was a nightmare on Frog Lane for Town as they went up 1-0 early through Lionel Furbert, before goals by Wayne (Bigga) Richardson, Kenny Hill, Brian (Bulla) Anderson, and Carlos Pearman took the Blazers to their second FA Cup final in three seasons.
While Boulevard will meet the winner of the other semifinal between league champions Somerset and Devonshire Colts, Mark Trott and his men were left to contemplate yet another season where they came up void of silverware.
A promising start greeted the St. John's Road club as they grabbed the lead in the 23rd minute when Furbert put them in front after receiving a ball up the middle from Walter Musson and shrugged off a tackle by Kenneth Darrell before lobbing past an advancing Mitchell Steede in goal for Boulevard.
The Blazers instigated a major change in their formation with Richardson pushed from his usual centre-back role to one of a more attacking midfielder.
And this move proved decisive, as even though he missed a gift chance in the 40th minute when a cross from the left by Amon Brown fell perfectly for him at the far post, he still managed to come back to equalise minutes later.
A right wing corner by Dwight Warren floated beautifully for the lanky player to rise high and plant a firm header past Ricky Tucker in goal for Town.
From this point the Blazers went from strength to strength, utilising superb team play to pin their opponents in defence, and it was no surprise when Hill made it 2-1 in their favour, following up on another troublesome header by Richardson that bounced from the grasp of Tucker, to tap in the rebound from close range.
A similar pattern followed during the second half with Pearman heading against the crossbar after a goalmouth scramble, as Tucker was again left exposed by a loose marking defence.
Anderson's goal came from nowhere, when he too benefited from slack marking to dribble from near the halfway line and unleashing a rising shot that dipped inches under the bar despite the efforts of Tucker, making the score 3-1.
The final nail in Town's coffin came when Pearman out-jumped the defence to head home a fourth goal for Boulevard and secure a berth in the final.
Nearing the end and with Town a beaten and sorrowful bunch it became a case of `pot-shots' being taken against the unfortunate Tucker, who was the only player remotely interested in continuing to play.
"Half the job has been done, but the full job has not yet finished,'' said Boulevard coach Gary Mallory, thankful of finally achieving a positive result after three replays. "We have let a lot of trophies slip by the wayside and there is one left for us to get.''
