Town march past Village
Dandy Town continued their march toward a second consecutive final appearance in the FA Cup with a dominating performance in their 2-0 win against North Village at Bernard Park yesterday.
Goals on either side of the interval by Pernell Douglas and Carlos Smith were enough to seal the result in Town's favour and give Mark Trott his second victory in as many matches as their new head coach.
Village, themselves coming off impressive victories over St. David's and Hamilton Parish, were never really in this match as they were made to play second fiddle to a Town outfit brimming with confidence after last week's 3-2 win over Somerset.
From the opening whistle it was clear which team possessed more desire with Town using the strong tailwind to their advantage and running at the home side's defence in waves while Village created little impression on their rival numbers.
The leader in most of these attacking moves was Paul Cann, who caused left-back Rahji Edness headaches with his speed and close dribbling skills.
Meanwhile on the other side, Walter Musson similarly tormented Wayne Augustus and the pair served to stretch the defence to the brink with it looking only a matter of time before they would crack.
Cann came close to opening Town's account after nine minutes of play when midfield workhorse George Dyer made his way along the left side before crossing to Cann only to have him poke a weak shot inches wide of the right upright.
At the other end, Kevin Jennings wasted a golden opportunity to put Village into the lead. Elliott Jennings laid the groundwork as he surged past his marker on the left and crossed to the wide-open Kevin Jennings, who hit his attempt from 16 yards high over the crossbar.
Action continued to be of the hectic variety with play switching from end to end, but Town still with the more clear-cut chances.
Cann went wide for the second time in the 23rd minute before Musson forced Village goalkeeper Cymande Davis into a spectacular diving save, turning his fierce left foot drive away for a corner.
Village were allowed to come more into the match as the half neared, however they found themselves trailing when Douglas turned on a dime to drive home Town's first goal past a maze of players after 36 minutes following a corner by Musson.
While Village were not out of the game by any means with just a 1-0 deficit at half-time. However, they were floored early in the second half when Smith latched onto a through-ball from Cann and sped up the middle past last defender Kimande Binns before coolly slotting the ball into the low right corner.
Following the match coach Trott, while happy with the result was still not totally satisfied with Town's ineptness around goal.
"We dominated the first half but only had one goal to show for it,'' said Trott. "We need to start showing domination in terms of goals.
