After several near misses during the season when goals have been conceded in the last few minutes, Swifts recorded their first win since joining the

Bluebirds took control of this B League game early, but Swifts weathered the storm to score a breakaway goal against the run of play midway through the first half.

Gaining in confidence, Ana Anton scored an excellent solo effort just before halftime to secure the points. The Swifts players, averaging less than 14 years old, managed to hang on in the second half to come off exhausted, but worthy winners.

In the other B game, Canaries and Cardinals cancelled each other out to record a 0-0 draw.

In the A League the two front running teams, Canaries and Cardinals, both won to keep things tight at the top. Canaries exposed a weakened Orioles team, going up 5-0 by the half.

However, Orioles recovered their pride in the second half and prevented their opponents from adding to their lead while creating some chances of their own.

Cardinals made heavy work of a resolute Longtails team, leaving it until late in the second half to beat Longtails 2-0 on goals from Maria Pichery and Gina Evans. In the other match, Police Orioles beat Bluebirds 3-0 on goals from Lisa Ray, Mary Ellen Jackson and Heidi Lynam.

BOWLING BOW Wahoo increased their lead at the top of the Fishbowl League when they dealt third-place Porgies a 3-1 defeat while second-placed Marlins went down 4-0 to Snappers.

Wahoo are four-and-half points in the lead while Porgies and Marlins are now tied for second.

Snappers were spurred on by Ann Mitchell's second high series and game -- 574 and 221 -- in their 4-0 win over Marlins.

Cathee Tumbridge led Wahoo's efforts in their 3-1 win with the women's top series and game of 588 and 233 while Doug Hines was close on her heels with the men's second high series 578.

Vernon Daniels led the Porgies efforts and came away with the third series and game of 574 and 217.

Dolphins met Tuna head on and came out with a 3-1 win. Trying to lead Tuna to a bigger share of the points was Marie Frith who bowled a 522 to claim the women's third high series.

Bertie Lines led the Hinds in a 3-1 win over Rockfish with the night's top series and game, a 613 and 224.

Mackerel had winning on their minds when they bowled Cow Pollies and went home with all four points on the lead of William Steede's 563 series and 203 game.

Kalvin Simmons assisted with the second high game of 222.

Sharks won all four points from Barracuda while Angel Fish beat Piranhas 3-1.

There is no bowling this week, with action resuming on Friday, February 18.

The 15th annual Rendezvous Bowling Tournament starts on Friday and continues all weekend before finishing on Monday evening with the Friendship nine-pin, no tap doubles which is free to all tournament participants. Entry forms are available from Warwick Lanes.

The annual Valentine Mixed Doubles Tournament was won on Sunday by the team of Rosalin Bean and Erwyn Bean with a total pinfall of 1,292 which earned them a cheque of $258.

Second on 1,292 was Sylvia O'Connor and John Maycock who pocketed $150 while Lejay Robinson and Calvin Basden earned $120 for finishing third with a 1,278 pinfall.

A total of 42 teams participated and there was a total payout of $798.

ATHLETICS ATH The Secondary and Primary Schools Cross Country competitions will take place this week, starting an finishing at National Stadium.

First to take the course will be the Secondary School girls today, followed by the boys tomorrow and Primary Schools -- girls and boys -- on Friday.

All races begin at 1 p.m.

DARTS DRT There is a meeting for Bermuda Darts Association members tomorrow night for anyone interested in the Caribbean Cup, scheduled for October in Trinidad and Tobago. The meeting takes place at National Sports Club at 8 p.m. For more information, contact Elizabeth Simons at 292-4519.

CRICKET CRI The Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association will hold lectures tomorrow at the Department of Youth and Sports at 7.30 p.m. for umpires and those wishing to join their ranks this season.

GOLF GLF Leroy Burch was the gross winner at the Port Royal monthly medal on Sunday after shooting 75.

In the net for nine-and-under handicaps, Andrew Wrigley took first place by three strokes over Noel Van Putten, 69 to 72, while Edward DeCosta's 70 gave him the top spot in the 10-18 handicap division. Leon James was second by retrogression on 71.

Neil Speight was first in the 19 and over handicap section, shooting a 67 while Horace Astwood was second on 70.

The closest to the pin for the women were D.Jones and J.Readwin, on the third and 16th holes while the men winners were A.Nicoll and D.Lowe on the eighth and 12th holes.
