Wolves bite but Zebras refuse to die

They say an animal is at its most dangerous when it's wounded and that was certainly the case for the Zebras of PHC last night.

Finding themselves 3-2 down with just two minutes to play against Wolves at Devonshire Rec. last night, the black and whites snatched a draw at the death when Raynel Lightbourne powered home.

In a match that was a fine advert for the game, Wolves secured a first-half lead through Mark Ray in the 39th minute.

Zebras then hit back with Lightbourne equalising in 52nd minute and substitute Stephen Astwood putting them ahead in the 60th.

An inspired substitution for Wolves saw Adam Outerbridge come on and after bringing the game back level with a 77th minute header, he gave his side what they must have surely thought was the winner in the 88th minute -- only for Lightbourne to secure a point at the death.

The game ebbed and flowed like an old-fashioned English cup tie, both sides attacking at will.

Early encounters floundered but that all changed though when Wolves' Jermaine Douglas put Ray through with a defence splitting pass, and the striker slid the ball under the Carlyle Crockwell as he advanced from goal.

He had a chance to double his tally on the stroke of half-time when Diallo Sharieff's shot was blocked and the ball fell to him six yards out only for the player to scoop it over the bar.

After an interval team talk PHC came out in determined fashion and seven minutes in Lightbourne robbed a defender and fought his way into the area before unleashing a vicious low shot into the net.

Ray spurned another chance when the ball fell to him in the box after a free-kick on the right. Although supporters thought he had put the ball in, it had actually drifted just past the upright.

Astwood put PHC in the front with a low shot into the far corner from a Duval Wilson cross and the same player was only a couple of feet wide with an audacious shot from just over the half-way line.

Sharieff's Herculean throw then caused confusion in the PHC defence and belying the adage `white boys can't jump' Outerbridge rose highest to back-head the ball into the net for 2-2.

The substitute appeared to have won the match for Wolves 11 minutes later when he beat Crockwell in a one-on-one duel and walked the ball into the net.

But the Zebras weren't done and Astwood served notice when his 25-yard free-kick struck the bar and bounced down a shade from the goalline six minutes from time.

They found the goal they were seeking just four minutes later, Lightbourne connecting following a free-kick on the right.

St. David's 1 Boulevard 0 A late goal from Lionel Cann sent St. David's home victorious and left Boulevard still looking for their first victory of the season.

Cann pounced after the Boulevard keeper failed to hold a stinging long distance shot as the game looked to be heading for a draw.

Lethal weapon: PHC's Stephen Astwood (left), who scored and struck the bar in last night's draw.
