'The First Grader' to screen this weekend

‘The First Grader’, an uplifting film about an 84-year-old Kenyan man who attends school for the first time, will again screen at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute this weekend.A screening of the film last weekend was sold out.‘The First Grader’ is an award-winning crowd-pleaser that has been a hit with festival audiences worldwide.When the government of Kenya announces it will offer free primary education for the first time, an 84-year-old man, a veteran of the country’s struggle for independence, shows up on the doorstep of a rural school, ready for class.Having never had the benefit of an education, Kimani N’gan’ga Maruge (played by Oliver Litondo) figures it’s never too late to start.The film is based on a remarkable true story.Naomie Harris plays the teacher, Jane, who supports her newest, and oldest, student. The film will screen Sunday at 3.30pm in the TradeWinds Auditorium at BUEI.Tickets, $15, can be purchased from Oceans Gift Shop at the BUEI, or by calling 297-7314.
