Defending champs Roots off to fast start

Reigning Commercial League champions Dandy Town Roots kicked off the new campaign with a comfortable 5-2 victory over Valley at St. John's Field on Saturday.

Valley matched Roots stride for stride during the first half but were unlucky when a hard cross from Roots' Maurice Lowe was put into his own net by a Valley defender. Valley earned a deserved equaliser shortly afterwards when striker Jonathan Eve smashed home after good approach work.

The second half was a different story as the home side brought on Walter Musson and Roots began to stroke the ball around with confidence.

Lowe put Roots ahead with a fierce drive from the left after combining with Musson. Roots then increased their lead through two quick strikes from Darron Simons and Kevin Hurdle. New striker Joey Weeks added the fifth after being set up by Hurdle.

Valley continued to press forward and were rewarded when a long ball upfield was misjudged by the Roots defence leaving striker Al Thomas to lob the ball home from distance.

Fresh from their pre-season Goose Gosling Tournament win, former champions MR Onions kicked off with a 4-0 victory against a new-look Robin Hood.

Niall Baillie opened the scoring with a low drive from the edge of the box after a corner was only partially cleared. Shortly afterwards Colin Keane doubled the lead with a disputed near post header; the visitors claiming the ball had gone in via his hand rather than his head.

Steve Woodward forced the Hood 'keeper into a good, close-range save, before MRs took a 3-0 lead into the interval thanks to a well-struck Nigel Forrester free kick.

The home team added a fourth in the dying minutes when Matt Ashfold converted a penalty after Kenny Vevers was upended in the box.

Key West Rangers began the 2007-08 season with a home win over newly-promoted Somerset Extros.

Failure to clear a fierce Jahmahl Mills shot presented last season's top scorer Sergio Griffin with a simple tap-in. Mills, playing in an unfamiliar right midfield role, notched from 30 yards ten minutes before the break.

Rangers were 3-0 up soon after the half-time break with a sliding finish from Brazilian import Fabiano Valadao. Extros came more into the game as the second half wore on and were rewarded with a goal after some casual play at the back by Key West.

Mills enjoyed a carbon copy of his first-half goal, again lobbing the keeper from all of 30 yards to put Key West up 4-1 but poor finishing from both sides meant the score stayed the same.

BAA and Lobster Pot shared the spoils in a dour encounter. BAA took the lead after 20 minutes of the first half with a wickedly deflected cross-shot from Simon Fascione which found its way into the far corner.

It was a lead that BAA didn't look like surrendering until in the 75th minute Lobster Pot equalized after a penalty area melee saw Torriano Trott poke home.

North Village Rams beat Tuff Dogs 4-3 with two goals from Stephen Coddington and one each from Elliot Jennings and Ross Lambe. Carlos Lopes, Joe Carola and Kevin Warner were on target for Tuff Dogs.
