BTC sues Government

Bermuda Telephone Company (BTC), a subsidiary of KeyTech Group of Companies, has issued another writ against the Ministry of Communications and E-Commerce.

The writ was filed on July 19, covers section 60 of the Telecommunications Act 1986 regarding a decision by the Minister of Telecommunications Michael Scott made on June 20.

KeyTech Director of Corporate Communications Ona Fletcher was not able to respond to inquiries from The Royal Gazette to comment on the legal action at press time.

Also Beverly Lottimore Director of Communication & Information said the matter is before the courts and the Ministry of Telecommunication does not comment on judicial matters.

BTC's attempt to overturn a directive from the Ministry was turn down on appeal when it reduced local access charges payable to the company to three cents. This represented a loss to BTC of $2 million in revenue on an annualised basis, according to KeyTech's 2006 annual report.

In KeyTech's Annual Report, the company said it was considering its options in relation to this matter.
