Lewis to become first Bermudian at Parapan Am Games

Wheelchair athlete Jessica Lewis is set to become the first Bermudian to compete at the ParaPan American Games, which are being held in Mexico this week.Lewis, who carried the Island’s flag at the Opening Ceremony on Saturday, is to perform in the 100, 200 and 400 metres.She qualified for all three events with times of 19.82 (100m), 37.52 (200m) and 1:13.47 (400m).The 18-year-old also surpassed the ‘B’ qualifying standard at the 100m for the Paralympic Games which will be held in London, England., next year.Her best 100m time of 19.83 seconds easily met the ‘B’ standard of 23.50 seconds. Her 200m time of 37.52 seconds is short of the ‘B’ standard by just two hundredths of a second.Lewis has been coached by former national team trainer Gerry Swan since 2009 and Ken Thorn while in school at Brock University in Canada.She will be accompanied by president of the Bermuda Paralympic Association, Ann Lindroth, Swan and her mother and Chef de Mission, Lorraine Lewis.
