Bottom Line on sale today
A headline in Monday's newspaper incorrectly said The Bottom Line magazine was now on sale. The magazine is free.
The latest issue of The Bottom Line, published by Crown Communications, part of Bermuda Press (Holdings) Ltd., includes a special report on women in business.
In the cover story, Elizabeth Harvey examines women and their climb up the almost exclusively male corporate ladder. But as Ms Harvey finds, women in senior management positions are still the exception to the male rule. Reasons cited, like lack of appropriate qualifications or lack of candidates, are wearing thin.
Along the same line, Tricia Lines profiles six women executives. They include Kempe & Whittle principal Lorraine Alexander, The Property Group principal Cris Valdes Dapena, Bank of Bermuda executive Paula Cox, Alexander Insurance Managers Ltd. executive vice president Gail Fox, PartnerRe Ltd. chief investment officer Anne Marie Gagnon and BF&M Life Insurance Company Ltd. vice president Judy Panchaud White.
Copies of biennial Bottom Line are available at various selected outlets around the Island starting today and are free.
The November issue also examines why the ranks of upper management in Bermuda's major hotels include so few Bermudians. In the piece, called "Room at the Top?'', James Ziral looks at whether or not real efforts are being made to offer Bermudians a path to the top. Or is discrimination at work? The issue also includes technology articles with a special focus on intranets, a networking internet application. The latest issue also examines electronic data interchange (EDI).
Other stories examine banking in Grand Cayman, a behind the scenes look at a big business conference as well as travel and books.
On the profile front, dial into Chris Gibbons article on TeleBermuda International Ltd., the company gearing up to compete with Cable & Wireless Plc for the Island's international telecommunications business. Mr. Gibbons, also the Bottom Line's managing editor, spoke with TeleBermuda boss Mike Kedar.
