But Attiya Talbot said although she finds studying in advance means that she is more comfortable in an exam, cramming works best for her.

She said: "I prioritise my homework based on the due date and difficulty and I make an effort to hand all assignments in on time.

The Smith's Parish resident has always been a straight 'A' student.

She said: "I hope that I can keep this up throughout my education. My best subjects are biology, math, Spanish and physics and my worst subject is American history."

The 16-year-old is on the High Honours List, and won the academic achievement award at her school - the PriceWaterhouseCoopers Award for being the most outstanding student in business studies.

Her extra curricular activities include netball, sewing and talking with friends.

While studying, Attiya prefers a little noise in the background, as she finds it easier to focus.

Attiya said: "I read a lot and at the moment my favourite book is 'A Child Called It'."

She is hoping to attend either Johns Hopkins University or Dalhousie University to study medicine, specialising in paediatrics.

"In our home it was always understood that education was the key to success," she said.

"I aim to become a respectable and productive member of both the local and global community - to achieve my goals of becoming a paediatrician and to remain focused."

She suggested to students who are having a hard time with education that they should examine their work habits to see if they are putting the time in and to ask themselves if they are really trying. If they are not trying hard enough, then they should just "Buck up".
