*** Interactive Education Services has released some new local books aimed at primary school children.

"Sidney the Sailboat'' and "Sidney and the Hurricane'' have been created to complement Bermuda's primary school curriculum.

"Children love Mark Booth's stories and Patricia DeCosta's illustrations, Beth Charlton said, "And the books are rich with teaching opportunities.'' Mrs. Charlton, a Bermudian living in Canada, is a teacher who has been developing curricula for many years. These guides reflect her personal philosophy that reading opens the doors to all areas of education.

The "Sidney'' books, based on the adventures of a Bermudian sailboat, introduce the reader to a wonderful story, lovely illustrations and provide a Bermudian background for lessons in geography, science, art, math, grammar and vocabulary.

Interactive Education Services, owned by a Bermudian, is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In addition to producing curriculum guides, Interactive Education provides parenting workshops and teacher in-servicing. Mrs. Charlton will be in Bermuda in March, and hopes to meet with local authors to discuss future projects.

*** The Saltus Junior School J5 class will perform a short play about the life of the composer Beethoven on Friday, March 7 at 2.30 p.m. in the Junior School Hall.

Parents and members of the public are cordially invited to attend the play which is free of charge.

Music will be performed by the children who have been studying Beethoven with their music teacher, Mrs. Sue Hall.

The entire class of 75 -- in period costume -- will participate in the programme which was written and directed by Mrs. Hall.

A few of the students will play soldiers and another Napoleon Bonaparte, to whom Beethoven dedicated one of his pieces.

"I think that making music more enjoyable for children at this age is an important part of the Junior School curriculum,'' says Mrs. Hall. "The students seem excited about the play and I believe they have learned a lot about Beethoven.'' Karol Sue Reddington
