Teacher recognised by JASON Project
an upcoming global science education project.
Mrs. Slaughter is one of 14 educators selected by the JASON Foundation for Education to take part in a special six-day course entitled JASON XI/STARDUST Summer Institute after her name was put forward by the Bermuda Biological Station for Research.
The facility's education officer Helle Patterson told The Royal Gazette yesterday that the Summer Institute's goal will be "to immerse key participants in the JASON XI Going to Extremes curriculum before the school year begins''.
The Summer Institute will take place at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, which is one of the two locations for JASON XI. The other will be the Aquarius underwater habitat which is located off the Florida Keys.
Mrs. Slaughter has an impressive resume when it comes to the JASON programme which uses video-satellite link-ups to teach, Mrs. Patterson said.
She participated in the curriculum writing of an earlier project in 1993; served as teacher aquanaut for the Bermuda expedition of JASON IX; has been a JASON mentor teacher; participated in all JASON professional development sessions at BBSR; and uses the JASON curriculum each year in her teaching.
In return for her participation in the Summer Institute, Mrs. Slaughter will help run JASON XI professional development workshops for local teachers on November 9.
Plum position: Teacher Janet Slaughter has been selected for a top teaching assignment.
