A 41-year-old caught with a machete in his pants on Union Street was yesterday remanded into custody.Ross Parsons, of Marsh Lane, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to having a bladed article in a public place.He told Magistrates’ Court he was taking the machete to Morgan’s Point for work.Prosecutor Nicole Smith said officers responded to a report of a man brandishing a machete near Place’s Place in Pembroke, around 10.15pm on June 10.A search produced a black-handled machete with a 16in blade in a green sheath in the right leg of his pants.Asked about the item, Parsons told thee officers: “It’s for my work. I remove asbestos.”Parsons told the court that he works as a supervisor at Morgan’s Point, and was bringing the machete to an office at the site.He said that on the way there, he stopped at LV’s Variety for a drink.“I left there, put the bottle in the trash can and that’s when the officers arrived,” he said. “I said I was on my way to Morgan’s Point. I told them what company I worked for.”Ms Smith said there was no evidence that Parsons ever told officers he was on his way to Morgan’s Point.And Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner, responding to Parsons story, said: “With the greatest respect, it would seem to me that the story you are telling me now is a whole bunch of foolishness.”Mr Warner also noted that Parsons had several previous convictions for serious offences, including assault with weapons, but had not been convicted of such an offence since 2002.He ordered a social inquiry report be carried out on Parsons and remanded him into custody until the report was completed.“Based on what I see and what I have heard, subject to the SIR, you will receive an immediate custodial sentence for this offence,” Mr Warner said. “It’s just a question of how long.”
