Holiday Drama
One week before Christmas everyone was in Hamilton cramming in some last minute shopping. Outside of Nine West two best friends were shopping for presents. They were on the search for the best Christmas gift. Walking, laughing, and sharing ideas, you would think these two best friends were happy and that there was no conflict between them at all.As they walked into Gibbons Company with clothes, shoes, and make-up on their minds, the taller of the two, Janice, spotted a gorgeous strapless red dress with a faint design sequin across the chest area. She ran over to it in complete awe, praying that there was still a size four left.“Yes!” screamed Janice. Luckily for her there was one size four left. Sarah, the smaller of the two, was standing back in the crowd watching her best friend snatch the dress she had desired herself from the rack. A surge of envy rushed through her, but she put on a smile and calmly walked over to Janice, who was filled with excitement. Janice was bouncing up and down, and she said, “Look! Look! There was one size four left! Just my luck right, Sarah?!”“Absolutely! You're so lucky, Jan” said Sarah in a hesitant voice. They walked over to the changing rooms so that Janice could try on the red dress. While waiting for Janice to get out of the room, Sarah pondered whether or not she would agree that the dress looked great on her or whether it did not. She had only a few seconds to decide, the door knob slowly turned, and her pulse was racing. She had made her choice.“So? What you think of the dress Sarah?” said Janice in a hopeful voice with a big smile on her face. She did a little twirl for her. The dress fit her perfectly, and her long blonde hair was a great accent.“Well, Jan, to be honest, it does no justice to your butt,” said Sarah with a cold and stern look on her face. The green monster had finally come out. Janice was astonished at the reply she had gotten from her best friend. She couldn't believe her ears.“What? Are you serious Sarah?! I thought you would have loved it,” said Janice in a hurt voice.“Well, you obviously thought wrong then. I just don't think that dress suits you well. I … I actually think it'll look better on me. I mean you knew I've always wanted a dress like that Janice, but that doesn't matter to you does it?” Sarah was holding her position showing that she was not afraid to speak her mind. Janice had a look of complete shock on her face. She was always used to people liking whatever she wore or tried on.“Sarah, you know that's not true; it does matter to me. Why can't you just be happy?” Janice said in a raspy voice.“Whatever! Do as you please, Janice, but I'm tired of seeing you get what you want all the time. I'm out.” Sarah left Gibbons Company with a small tear rolling down her cheek and an angry look on her face. She couldn't believe that she had just done that to her best friend. As days passed, the fight Sarah and Janice had passed through her head constantly. She regretted everything, but then she also felt that it had to have taken place. She had seen Janice after the fight at a Christmas Eve party in the neighbourhood. Janice walked right past her and didn't even look at her. Sarah's mum had noticed this and questioned her about what happened between them. After she was finished explaining, her mum had told her that it was just a dress and that it should not have gotten between them. Her mother also stated that they had been best friends since nursery school. She pulled out a small torn up photo of the two girls in princess gowns, holding hands. Sarah looked closely at their hands and saw the friendship bracelets that they had made on that day. She looked down at her wrist and saw how worn out it was now. She slowly looked to her left where Janice was standing talking to her parents; she glanced at her wrist and saw that she too was still wearing hers. Sarah knew what she had to do. Even though tomorrow was Christmas, Sarah was going to apologise, one way or another. As soon as Sarah woke up, she smelled cinnamon rolls being baked. She ran down the stairs and hugged her parents and wished them a “Merry Christmas”. When they finished eating, they went into their living room and were overwhelmed with the joyous smell of their Christmas tree. As they laughed and smiled while opening their gifts, Sarah couldn't help but think about Janice and how badly she felt. In an instant she ran upstairs, got her coat, came back down, and went straight out her door. She ran all the way down the road, six houses down. She was at Janice's house. Out of breath, she knocked at the door three times. Sarah spotted a shadow coming towards the door, and as it flew open she realised, it was Janice.Without any words Sarah went straight for a hug, and even though she was still catching her breath she whispered, “I'm so sorry, Jan.” Janice stood still for a few minutes, and when she had come to her senses she hugged Sarah back. Tears were gently sloping down both of their faces, and they wished each other with full-sized smiles on their faces a “Merry Christmas”. They both realised that even with all the gifts they had received, the best Christmas gift that they could have ever wanted was right in front of them a best friend.
