Bermuda's not boring. Just ask Claire

A casual debate between friends over the lack of excitement in Bermuda led Claire Hattie to create popular website, Nothing to Do in Bermuda? Its focus on upcoming events has proven so successful that Bermuda Press Holdings Limited purchased it. Visit www.nothingtodoinbermuda.com tomorrow, and check out its new look.

Before coming to Bermuda a few years ago, Ms Hattie lived in a small village in Scotland where there was very little to do. There was no movie theatre the height of excitement was a nearby department store. When she heard people here complaining that there was nothing to do, she laughed.“I thought that was ridiculous,” she said. “I am from a small town where there really is nothing to do. In Bermuda, I struggle to fit things in. There is so much going on for such a small place.”She decided to prove her point to her friends by sending out an e-mail the next week saying, ‘think there is nothing to do? Here is a list of things’. It was so well received that she started sending out the list every week. At first, she just sent it to her friends, but word spread, and soon she was getting requests from strangers to be put on the mailing list. Since her background was in marketing, putting together the list seemed natural.“Interest in it just exploded,” she said. “The list got bigger and bigger. Then in 2010 I decided it would be better to create a website so that everyone could access the flyers that went with the event listings. I also created a Facebook page. I thought it would just be my friends looking at it.“Within a couple of days I already had 50 likes on the Facebook page. Most of the likes were from people I didn’t know. From there it went a little crazy. It was really well received and people seemed excited that there was a resource like this with local events. As of this morning I had 6,000 likes on my Facebook page. I used to have to go out and search for stuff that was going on, but now I have most of it e-mailed to me by event organisers.”She’s now satisfied that she has definitively won the original argument with her friends and anyone else who thinks there is a lack of social activity on the Island.“When people say they are bored I really don’t understand how, because I really struggle to fit everything in,” she said. “There is so much going on and so much I want to do. To hear some people talk you’d think nothing ever happened here. Granted, you need to make more of an effort in Bermuda. If you are in a big city you can just wander around and things happen to you, whereas here you have to be more proactive and say ‘this is what we want to do next week’.”The initial website was just an inexpensive template the new website has all the bells and whistles.“It will have the same web address, but it will be a lot more user-friendly and a lot easier to see the different resources that are on there,” she said. “The heart of the website is my blog and that gets sent out as a weekly e-mail to anyone who subscribes to the mailing list. There are other sections as well. There is a calendar side of it. I have a page with links to all the local bloggers. I have resources for different activities if you want to make your own fun, instead of waiting for an event to come up. There are sections I don’t think a lot of people really got to see before on the old website. These will be more highlighted.”In the past, she has organised a few events of her own, and she would like to do more of that in the future. She is a member of the Caledonian Society, and last year helped them to create a Scottish Chinese takeout menu to raise funds. Through Nothing to Do in Bermuda?, she arranged dinners, a night golf evening, and a Hallowe’en event that was successful. In the last couple of months though, she has been more focused on the new website launch.“I am really excited and really nervous about the launch,” she said. “I just hope that people like it.”
