Kite honour for Dr. Philip Jones
Enthusiast Dr. Phillip Jones' 15-foot 'Chairman Mao' kite, which won the Grand Prize in last year's Smithsonian Kite Festival in Washington, DC, is enjoying further glory as part of an Andy Warhol exhibition in the Waterloo Regional Children's Museum in Canada.
Dr. Jones, an Emergency Room physician at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, designed and made the kite himself. He created the iconic Warhol image of Chairman Mao's face from a mosaic of fabrics to form the centre panel, which is 15 feet in diameter. In all, the finished kite comprises 531 separate pieces, all of which Dr. Jones designed, cut out and sewed together by hand.
The exhibition continues through April 19, but may be extended. Meanwhile, further information can be found at website http://news.therecord.com/videogallery/469688, and also at http://cordweekly.com/cordweekly/news
