Mr. Clive Francis, a 22-year-old chef at Southampton Princess Hotel, will be heard on local radio stations with a "slammin'' rapper's message urging young people to "just don't do it.'' Mr. Francis' song is the centrepiece of an anti-smoking campaign launched by the Health Department to coincide with World No Tobacco Day, observed in Bermuda last Friday.

Health promotion coordinator Mrs. Ivena Laurenceo decided to get the message out using the musical skills of Mr. Francis, who last year won the Teen Services Talent Show.

Mr. Francis said it was important for the song "to be hyped to attract young people.

"The basic idea was to get the message behind a happening groove; a groove that was slammin','' he said.

The 60-second commercial, produced free of charge by Mr. Leland Hicks of New York, is to be aired throughout the year on local radio.

Mr. Francis, who is part of the Bermuda group Lost Boys, sings the rap chant that tells young people: "You know you don't need it/So why do you use it/You better just beat it/Or you can just lose it.''
