Greenspan coming to Bermuda

Dr. Greenspan

He's the man of the moment, in fact it has been a long time since he hasn't been, Alan Greenspan the former chairman of the US Federal Reserve, will be the star attraction at MARHedge's annual Hedge Fund Summit in Bermuda next month.

Dr. Greenspan, who has been making news in past weeks with the publication of his long-awaited memoir The Age of Turbulence: Adventure in a New World in which he said oil was the dominant reason for the Iraq war, is the keynote speaker at the summit beimng held at the Fairmont Southampton on October 28.

The event is in its 14th year and organisers expect a turnout of 650 delegates.

It is taking place at a time when hedge funds are back under the spotlight because of the fall-out from the sub-prime mortgage crisis in the US.

Top of the agenda should be the impact of the subprime mortgage crisis on hedge funds, particularly in light of Bear Stearns, the securities firm hit hardest by the collapse of the subprime market, which reported its biggest profit decline in more than a decade.

The summit will focus on the need for hedge funds pursuing long-term, sustainable growth to establish and maintain relationships with investors and have the proper business infrastructure and systems in place and operating well.

Lora Ballato, director of MARHedge Conferences, said Bermuda was the ideal location to hold the conference due to its proximity to New York and the American and key worldwide hedge fund markets.

"We are expecting 650 delegates, which is up from the last year, and I think one of the differences from last year is the level of attendees has gone up and many more institutional investors, which are on of the groups hedge fund managers look to meet," she said.

"But overall, we just have some phenomenal speakers, so it should be a great event."

There will be a series of Governance, Risk and Compliance sessions throughout the event , which will feature a number of the RCA's CCO University faculty, aimed at bringing together top regulatory, legal, administrative and compliance experts to look at the main issues in a variety of jurisdictions that hedge funds must understand and respond to to meet their obligations and properly manage their operations as well as serve their clients.

A number of presentations and panel discussions will also be held by industry experts focusing on what makes a successful hedge fund and the latest trends and issues in managing their businesses.

These will include investors' views and outlooks on the industry, how to construct compensation schemes to ensure employee retention, creating a comprehensive role for marketing, managing media relations.

Also how new managers can attract seed and additional capital, valuing illiquid securities, strategy outlooks and the business model of the future.

Apart from keynote speaker Dr. Greenspan, there will be views expressed by Luis Alvarez, chief investment officer and director of the Puerto Rico Government Employees and Judiciary Retirement Systems Administration, Toby Crabel, Jeffry Haber, controller of the Commonwealth Fund, Jerry Davis, chairman of the board of trustees of the New Orleans Employment Retirement System, Cathy Iberg, managing director and head of Marketable Alternatives at the University of Texas Investment Management Company and Rob Weigand, Professor of Finance and Brenneman Professor of Business Strategy at Washburn University School of Business.

Other companies being represented include Blackstone Group and educational institutions such as California Institute of Technology and George Washington University.
