Bay bring in Burgess, Trott: Eastern counties CRICKET

Eastern Counties Cup against Cleveland County at Sea Breeze Oval, bringing in batsman Irving Burgess and pace bowler Clarkie Trott.

They will replace medium-pace bowlers Jermaine Outerbridge, who is in England, and Dennis Pilgrim who has been named a reserve.

Outerbridge and Pilgrim helped Bay score their whopping 260-run victory over Flatts in the first round at Sea Breeze Oval on July 20, but the changes appear to have made the champions even stronger for this match-up.

Challengers Cleveland, potentially Bay's strongest threat in the competition, have themselves named an impressive team with spinner Hasan Durham of Western Stars and former skipper/all-rounder Peter Philpott of Police included in a squad of 13.

Bay are aware of the challenge that could develop in this clash with veteran Noel Gibbons' assessment of the confrontation clearly indicating their concern.

Brought in on Tuesday from England, where he is player-coach for county league club Buckhurst, Gibbons said: "Cleveland will give us more competition than we got against Flatts, they always have. When it comes to any team challenging us in the County they seem to live for this one day alone. We certainly have to keep a close eye on them.'' The all-rounder relishes the opportunity to play for Bay again. He played against Flatts and scored 26 and views this as a chance to build on his already leading aggregate of runs in the competition.

"I've been in fairly good form since the last game with scores of 61, 61, 81 and 14 in four games in England. "Against Flatts we had orders to hit the ball around a bit and sacrifice our wickets for a few runs,'' recalled Gibbons who hopes a more civilised approach to batting this time will enable him to make an even greater contribution tomorrow.

Recently Gibbons proved to be as sharp as ever with his seam bowling, snatching seven for 26 in a league game.

Bay will also be graced by another player who competes in England, batsman Glenn Smith who plays with Benwell. Smith scored 13 against Flatts and followed with scores of 20 and 42 in Cup Match.

One surprise omission in Cleveland's squad is veteran Grant Smith, but reports are that he asked not to be given consideration this time around.

Bailey's Bay: Ricky Hill (capt), Roger Trott, Glenn Smith, Charlie Marshall, Noel Gibbons, Irving Romaine, Anthony Braithwaite, Clarkie Trott, Calvin Dill, Corey Hill, Irving Burgess. Res: Dennis Pilgrim, Steven Outerbridge.

Cleveland: Aaron Adams (capt), Curtis Jackson (vice-capt), Jermaine Postlethwaite, Allan Douglas, Jason Simons, Gregory Talbot, Johnny Richardson, Andre Smith, Hasan Durham, Peter Philpott, Courtney Trott, Wayne Smith, Carlton Smith Jr.

The touring Western Stars youth team (under-12) opened their account in Barbados in fine style with a 76-run victory over Ignatius Byer on Wednesday.

Stars totalled 103 for six from 25 overs, spurred by 34 from opener Gavin Manders, a dashing 30 from just 18 balls by Dion Stovell and Fucre Crockwell's 18.

Ignatius Byer were never in the hunt for the target, falling for a mere 27 as spinner Taurean Manders grabbed three wickets at a cost of just one run from three overs, Crockwell two for one from two overs and young Oronde Foggo one for five.

Stars were due to play St. Bernards yesterday and will also take on Bay Primary (today), Boscobe Primary (Monday) and area champions St. Joseph Primary on Tuesday.
