Simons sprints to double bronze
Bermuda's former two-time Olympic sprinter Gregory Simons captured two bronze medals at last week's US Masters Indoor Championships in Boston.
Competing in both the 200 and 400 metres, Simons rediscovered some of the past form that saw him represent the Island at both the 1976 and 1984 Olympic Games in Montreal and Los Angeles.
The veteran athlete placed third in both events to earn himself a trip to the podium after competing against an elite group of world renowned athletes.
The local sprinter finished behind Barbados' own former two-time Olympian Val Barnswell in the 200 metres after completing the race in 24.32 seconds - just four tenths of a second behind his Caribbean rival.
En route to the final, Simons won his qualifying heat while recording the second fastest time over the 200 metres, breaking the tape in 24 seconds flat.
A similar story later unfolded in the 400 metres in which Simons again placed third in a time of 56 seconds flat.
Having now made a successful return to the indoor arena after a lengthy absence, Simons is gearing towards July's World Masters Championships in Puerto Rico.
"It was pretty good, very exciting and the competition was very hard," said Simons. "The guys that I usually compete against during the outdoor events were also there. I felt fairly good competing in the 400. It was just one straight final that went by times. But in the 200 I actually won my heat with the second fastest time going into the finals."
Though generally satisfied with his exploits in Boston, Simons is now hoping to record even faster times during July's Masters series in the Caribbean.
"That meet (US Indoor) was used to gauge where I presently stand and at the moment I think that I need to concentrate more on my speed work," he added. "That's where they beat me. I was right there on strength but I need to improve on my speed work. And starting tomorrow (today) I will begin working on my speed work at the National Sports Centre where I will be training four days a week."
