Wasps moved back into sole possession of first place in the standings with a surprise 2-0 win over previous leaders Chameleons, despite playing with only
In the morning match NSC Rebels and Polecats battled to a scoreless draw.
Rebels dominated much of the first half and managed a few shots on goal, all of which were handled by keeper David Kerr. Polecats managed a few breakaways but produced little in scoring chances.
In the second half Polecats started to exert more pressure in the mid-field and created more opportunities, the best of which fell to Craig Burt who missed the ball in front of a wide open goal. Rebels' best chance fell to Chris Edmunds whose hard shot near the end slammed against the side board.
The afternoon match looked to be a struggle for Wasps when they could only field nine men. However, good defensive work and opportunistic goal scoring won the day as Wasps got off to a stunning start after 15 minutes when defender Richard Adlam dribbled by three defenders and smashed the ball into the top corner of the net.
Chameleons poured on the pressure, but despite winning a host of short corners, they were unable to produce any clear cut chances. Wasps secured the two points mid-way through the second half when Simon Farrington slipped through the Chameleons defence and scored.
Saturday's first scheduled game amongst the women gave the Bluebirds reason to celebrate when, despite very wet and slippery conditions, they defeated Coca Cola Cardinals B 1-0 to clinch the league title.
Georgina Adlam scored the game's only goal.
The Cardinals pressured the Bluebirds throughout in hopes of an equaliser but just couldn't find the goal. With three weekends of league play still remaining, Bluebirds have already wrapped up the B League, leaving them to relax for the rest of the season while the second, third and fourth places are determined. Saturday's second game between Coca Cola Cardinals and North Village Longtails in the A League was postponed because of poor weather. This game was to be the tie-breaker for the league.
On Sunday, PHC Canaries B and Police Orioles B played to a scoreless draw despite Canaries dominating the game. Marcia Ford of the Orioles had an outstanding match but didn't get the needed support from her teammates to make any difference in the overall game.
The only difference in the A League match between Canaries and Orioles was that the Canaries were able to find the net five times in their 5-0 win. Emma Garon led the scoring with four goals while Jackie White scored the other.
Excellent goalkeeping by Elizabeth Kerr saved Orioles from an even bigger defeat.
NETBALL NET Netts Whites won the Second Division knockout final when they edged by Wolves 17-16 on Sunday in a thrilling match at Bernard Park.
Netts got into the final by beating Warwick Reds 21-9 in the semi finals while Wolves stopped PCC 20-6 in the other match.
Those were the only matches played this weekend as the heavy rain forced the postponement of Saturday's matches.
In First Division knockout action this weekend Aico play PCC at 12.30, Olympic Panthers take on Coca Cola at 1.30 and North Village take on Hamilton Parish at 2.30. Nets have a bye. The semi-finals and finals are scheduled for the following weekend.
