Not guilty plea to arson charge

William Albert Smith, 66, pleaded not guilty to arson and breaking and entering with intent to commit arson on February 15, 1992.

The Hesitation Lane resident allegedly committed the offence on the eve of the renovated headquarters' grand opening in the Alaska House building on Court Street, Hamilton.

Smith's trial has been set for May 4.

Also appearing yesterday was dentist Vincent Rowland Chesterfield Bridgewater, 52, who pleaded not guilty to 18 charges relating to alleged fraudulent insurance claims.

The Sharon Lane, Pembroke, resident is accused of obtaining over $21,000 from BF&M by issuing false dental work claims between April 10, 1989 and November 16, 1990.

Bridgewater, who is free on bail, will be appearing for mention next month.

George Alfred Spencer pleaded guilty to two of four drug charges which had been levelled against him.

The Roberts Avenue, Devonshire, resident admitted importing heroin into the Island on September 28 of last year and obstructing a Police officer on the same date.

The 27-year-old will appear for sentencing on March 12.

The remaining charges, possession of heroin with intent to supply and assaulting a Police officer, now "lay in the files''.

A Devonshire man denied 18 currency violations, which allegedly occurred between March 11, 1991 and June 9, 1992.

Troy Anthony Commissiong, 31, pleaded not guilty to making false statements and failing to surrender foreign currency.

The Jubilee Road resident will be appearing for mention next month.

Troy Leroy Nelson Durham of Mount Hill, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to 12 currency violations, for which the 29-year-old will be sentenced March 15.

They include making false statements to the Monetary Authority and failing to surrender foreign currency to authorised dealers between March 20 and April 24, 1992.

Oliver Simmons, 42, denied making false statements to the Bermuda Monetary Authority and failing to surrender foreign currency.

The Bridal Hill, Smith's parish, resident allegedly committed the currency violations between September 9, 1991, and July 17, 1992.

Free on bail, Simmons will next appear in court for mention in April.

A Pembroke parish man pleaded not guilty to charges of assault with intent to commit rape and the indecent assault of a woman on March 21, 1992. The 60-year-old man will appear for mention next month.

Another man, from Paget, pleaded not guilty to raping a woman on August 30 last year. The 38-year-old is free on bail, until his appearance for mention on April 5.

New York teenager Lyssa Milagros Arroyo pleaded guilty to one of the three drugs charges laid against her, that of importing cocaine into Bermuda on November 21 of last year.

The 19-year-old Bronx resident will remain in custody until her sentencing on March 12.

The remaining charges, possession of a controlled drug intended for supply and conspiracy to import, now lay in her file.

A Sandys parish man pleaded not guilty to three drugs offences, which allegedly occurred on June 26, 1992.

Leon Sinclair Smith, 29, is charged with supplying cocaine to another person, possessing cocaine with intent to supply and possessing equipment fitted for the preparation of a controlled drug.

The Sound View Road resident is free on bail.

Kenneth Douglas of Pembroke also denied the drugs charges against him. The 38-year-old pleaded not guilty to possessing and handling cocaine intended for supply.

The Middle Town resident must appear for mention next month.

Roger Eugene Lightbourne, 25, denied six charges stemming from an incident at the St. George's Beach Club on April 15, 1991.

He pleaded not guilty to the unlawful wounding one person, unlawfully doing grievous bodily harm to two others, assaulting a fourth individual causing bodily harm, fighting in a public place and possessing an offensive weapon, namely a bat.

The Sound View, Somerset, resident will appear for mention next month.
